The Warsaw 14 Mezuzah

$300

Bronze Mezuzah from Warsaw.

This mezuzah is a bronze cast of imprint of the mezuzah trace found at the old tenement at Walicow Street in WarsawMi Polin created a new mezuzah out of bronze to make the history tangible. Touching the mezuzah activates a link between past and present.

The Story:

Many distinguished persons lived in the tenement house at 14, Waliców St in Warsaw before WW II . One of them was Dawid Szulman, a lawyer who during the war was a member of the Jewish Military Union. As a lawyer he judged traitors and Jewish members of Gestapo – SS and Wehrmacht collaborators. Together with Berł Braudo and Sara Granatsztejn he executed a death penalty on the director of the Judenrat economic department, Izrael Firszt, for collaborating with the Germans. All three of them were killed in the Holocaust.

About the Mi Polin Home Series Project:

More than 3.5 million Jews lived in Poland before World War II. In the majority of Jewish homes, on the doorposts of every door used to be mezuzot. With the War, the mezuzot disappeared – leaving nothing but traces of emptiness and loneliness. These traces we cast in bronze creating new and trace based mezuzot to give a new life to those long gone and fulfil their holy function. Again. Every mezuzah is a story of a given house, family and person. Touching the mezuzah activates a link between past and present.

About This Artist

Mi Polin

MI POLIN is the first Polish Judaica company since World War II. MI POLIN was created by Helena Czernek and Aleksander Prugar in 2014 to design and produce contemporary Judaica from Poland.

Before World War II in Warsaw alone there were over 30 companies producing Judaica. The art of Judaica production perished during World War II. Seven decades later we were the ones who resurrected this rich, centuries-old tradition by creating MI POLIN. We have revived and continued this tradition to design and produce contemporary Judaica from Poland in order to enrich Jewish life and strengthen Jewish identity.
